Out of Wedlcok Childbearing and Paternal Absence: Trends and Social Effects
While this article is biased (everything has some bias) and from a religious perspective, I thought it was important to point out the importance of marriage to children. There has been a lot of discussion about marriage in the gay marriage threads and no matter how you stand on gay marriage, I think it is important that we acknowledge the facts about children born out of wedlock and the facts about the importance of the institution of marriage for society. Although it is a fact that more and more children are being born out of wedlock, now nearly 40%, overall, this is generally not good for society. While some children born out of wedlock become successful, intelligent adults, this is usually when they have other supportive, stable adults around them. However, many children born out of wedlock grow up in poverty and in unstable environments. This occurs much more frequently than for children born to a married couple.
