less money is more!
This is a continuation of my last blog post on the entertainment industry...
so recently I saw a movie called "ONCE", and that brought my attention to a movie genre long termed "indie" by popular culture. When I saw it I liked how it didn't follow the conventional story line and I saw that it was still hugely entertaining. After the movie, i watched the special features and saw how they made it and was surprised by their budget of just $100,000 !! and then I picked up the latest film quarterly and read that just because some movies have low budgets, doesn't mean they aren't entertaining, and yes profitable.
ONCE even won an oscar and it has brought in at least fourfold in profits. Its not the only great, unconventional movie out there though. Other names include Gus Van Sant's Paranoid park, elephant. And of course who can forget the teen hit Garden State. Also Julie delpy's Before Sunset, and After Sunset, made famous by long 11-minute straight footage. All these movies are exceptionally fresh and creative and inject much needed quirk to the entertainment industry. A HUGE reason how they are able to do it is because of the freedom the directors have when they are only borrowing little sums from big studios.
As Gus Van Sant was quoted, having little money to work with keeps the studios from barging in and changing the character and plot to make it have "mass appeal". So if your an aspiring film director, don't be too sad that your latest project is not budgeted to the likeness of Transformers or a boeing 747 dreamliner.
